Greetings from Sri Lanka!

In Sri Lanka Calling this week, we congratulate distinguished Sri Lankan’s Dr Mohan Munesinghe, Vice Chairman Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 and Justice Christopher Weeramantri for winning the ‘Right Livelihood Award 2007’, widely known as the “Alternative Nobel.” We also have news of the Sailing Nationals event, Galle Literary Festival 2008 programme being announced, drawing award winning authors, 12th Sri Lankan Golf classic’s success, of Sri Lanka Tourism wining the bid to hold next PATA AGM, Board and committee meetings, England winning the One day International Cricket

series and Sri Lanka retaining its original position in ODI rankings and Sri Lanka a land like no other making its mark as a destination for the sporty – ready to host Raid Amazon 2008.

‘We take pride in congratulating Dr Mohan Munesinghe, of Sri Lanka, the vice chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change and his team which was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 for the efforts of the IPCC to build up and spread knowledge about man-made climate change and for laying foundations for measures to fight it. Sri Lanka Tourism’s own unique initiative “Towards a Carbon Free Sri Lanka: A Tourism Earth Lung” presented at the UNWTO/UNEP/WMO/WEF ‘2nd Climate Change and Tourism Conference’ in Davos, Switzerland, two weeks ago to work towards making Sri Lanka a carbon neutral tourism destination, compliments and supports the way forward strategies of the IPCC.

The Right Livelihood Award also known as the “Alternative Nobel” was won by activists from Sri Lanka, Kenya, Canada and Bangladesh for their efforts to promote peace, bio diversity and renewable energy. ‘Sri Lanka Calling’ extends warm congratulations to Justice Weeramantri of Sri Lanka for earning the award for his efforts to “Strengthen and expand the rule of law” as stated on the award citation.

The fourth Janashakthi Sailing Nationals, will draw over 40 competitors, to the Bolgoda lake situated 25 kilometres away from the city of Colombo on 20th and 21st October. The event is in four categories- Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, and Laser standard. All boats will be wind powered making it another eco-friendly sporting event honouring Sri Lanka Tourism’s commitment to keeping Sri Lanka carbon clean. Having won one Gold, one silver and a bronze at the South Asian Yachting Regatta, yachting is fast catching up in Sri Lanka and the Sailing Nationals this year is set to generate much enthusiasm among participants and spectators alike.

This premier sporting event on the SriLankan Airlines calendar drew over 150 golfers to the hill capital Kandy. The picturesque Victoria Golf and Country Resort saw repeat visitors mainly from Europe and some new faces from the Middle East and the Far East also participating in the tournament this year. Some golfers who have been keen participants were attracted to the event and enjoyed the beautiful Victoria Golf Course rated among the 100 most beautiful courses in the world. The location enthrals visitors; the fresh air and cool climes of Digana is half an hour drive from Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism Authority Renton de Alwis, President Hoteliers Association of Sri Lanka Hiran Cooray, Sri Lankan Airline’s Manoj Gunawardena and PATA Sri Lanka Chapter’s Jayantha Panabokke were present when Sri Lanka Tourism’s bid presented by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau to hold the 2008 PATA Board and Committee Meetings in Colombo was accepted by the PATA Board of Directors in Bali, Indonesia. With key international tourism industry leaders participating at the event in April 2008, it will be another boost for Sri Lanka Tourism’s efforts to draw MICE events to Sri Lanka.

England bagged the ODI series played in Sri Lanka, winning three games and loosing two, while Sri Lanka with their final win were able to retain the fourth spot in the LG ICC ODI Championship ranking. Visitors will return in December for the test series scheduled from 1st to 22nd December. Paul Collingwood and his team will meet Mahela Jayawardena and his men in Kandy at the 1st Test from the 1st to 5th December, the 2nd from 9th to 13th in Colombo and the 3rd in Galle from 18th to 22nd. The results of the ODI has heightened the interest of cricket loving spectators, including the ‘Barmy Army’ to visit Sri Lanka to cheer their team coupling cricket with good times on exotic beaches and visits to places of interest all around the match venues.

One of the world’s newest leading literary festivals - the Galle Literary Festival will be on from the 16th to 20th January 2008 in the historic coastal town of Galle in the south of Sri Lanka. The town’s magnificent UN World heritage Fort will transform in to a hive of literary activity, as it did last year, when lovers of literature gather to listen to famous authors the likes of Vikram seth, novelist essayist and play write, Gore Vidal, just two in a list of distinguished writers gracing the festival. Sri Lanka, fast earning a reputation as a destination catering to the most discerning, now offers the sporty traveller, the excitement of competition and sports, alongside its nature, culture, adventure and the long established sea and sand offer. In January 2008 Sri Lanka is set to host the world’s biggest women’s multi-sport adventure race – Raid Amazon.

French organizer (ZBO) of the internationally acclaimed RAID AMAZONES will hold the 7th edition in January 2008 in Sri Lanka. RAID AMAZONES has previously been hosted in exotic travel destinations in Guyana, Reunion, Mauritius and Kenya.

The RAID is a multi-sport adventure race where around 200-250 women, make up teams of three, and over a period of 6 days participate in various events, ranging from biking, canoeing, jungle courses and going on to multiple other outdoor activities. The idea being one of enjoying, discovering and relishing a country’s landscape, its people, culture and traditions while engaging in sporting activities. For more details visit www.srilanka.travel
